Perplexity, a conversational search and discovery engine, has announced a strategic partnership with PayPal, a global leader in online payments and financial services, to introduce agentic commerce capabilities to the Perplexity Pro platform in the U.S.
The collaboration aims to simplify how consumers shop, book, and purchase online by enabling instant checkouts via PayPal or Venmo directly within Perplexity’s chat interface.
This innovation allows users to complete transactions in real time through natural conversation, removing the friction typically associated with online commerce.
Perplexity’s platform is designed to fuse real-time web data with generative AI models, delivering cited answers and actionable outcomes in a single chat interface.
The tool supports users in a variety of tasks, from researching topics and comparing products to planning travel—all by asking simple questions in natural language. With the new PayPal integration, users can now complete purchases without leaving the chat, marking a significant leap forward in conversational commerce.
PayPal, which operates across nearly 200 markets and serves over 430m active accounts globally, will power this new commerce capability.
It will do so using its secure tokenised wallet, passkey checkout flows, and integrated services such as account linking, shipping, tracking, and invoicing—all handled behind the scenes. These features aim to remove the need for passwords and streamline purchases to just a single click or query.
This partnership not only brings PayPal’s secure and scalable payment solutions to Perplexity’s AI platform but also extends Perplexity’s reach across PayPal’s vast global user base.
With a focus on trust, security, and real-time execution, the collaboration is positioned to reshape how consumers make purchasing decisions within AI-powered environments.
“Perplexity wants to have accurate, trustworthy answers wherever people are making decisions. PayPal is a natural partner because we share a vision for how important trust is in the age of AI,” Perplexity cofounder and CEO Aravind Srinivas said.
“This partnership unlocks new possibilities, where conversations now drive commerce,” PayPal president and CEO Alex Chriss said. “We’re making it easy and secure to shop right in the chat when inspiration strikes. It’s a powerful step in making conversational commerce a reality.”
