Nuvei, the Canadian FinTech company, has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and will be among the first payment providers to offer support for Wero, EPI’s digital wallet, enabling eCommerce merchants to accept instant account-to-account payments through its platform.
The move aligns with Nuvei’s strategic goal to provide its merchant partners with early access to emerging payment technologies.
As European markets increasingly seek solutions that promote payment sovereignty and local consumer preferences, the integration of Wero offers Nuvei’s clients a competitive edge.
Wero, developed under the EPI initiative, facilitates instant account-to-account (A2A) payments through SEPA Instant Credit Transfer protocols.
It allows users to send money within 10 seconds using mobile numbers, email addresses, or QR codes. Initially launched in Germany, France, and Belgium in late 2024, Wero has already gained over 40m users.
Its expansion into the Netherlands and Luxembourg is imminent, with plans to introduce Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services and loyalty programmes in the near future.
Nuvei’s integration of Wero means that ecommerce merchants will be able to accept Wero payments through a single integration point on Nuvei’s core platform. Pilot programmes for the feature are starting in May 2025, with general availability planned for September 2025.
This collaboration is part of Nuvei’s broader strategy to build one of the most comprehensive portfolios of alternative payment methods (APMs) on the market. With a flexible, single integration model, Nuvei empowers merchants to customise their payment mix in line with local preferences and fast-evolving market trends.
Philip Fayer, Nuvei Chair and CEO, commented on the announcement: “Europe is actively seeking greater payment sovereignty and consumer-centric solutions, and Wero directly addresses these strategic imperatives. By integrating Wero into our platform early, we are empowering our merchant partners to capitalize on emerging payment trends and deliver preferred local payment experiences at scale. This positions Nuvei uniquely as a leader in supporting European merchants with forward-thinking payment innovations.”
Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, added: “Our partnership with Nuvei is a new key step towards Wero’s expansion to the e-commerce sector. By making Wero available to Nuvei’s extensive merchant network, we’re accelerating the adoption of a truly European payment solution that enhances financial sovereignty while delivering a seamless, easy and innovative experience for consumers and businesses alike. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our vision of creating a unified payment ecosystem that serves the unique needs of the European market.”
