The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in financial crime compliance (FCC) operations is revolutionizing the banking sector. As of the Celent Dimensions Survey 2025, which involved 232 risk and compliance executives, AI for efficiency has emerged as the top priority for IT investment.

According to Workfusion, while AI’s adoption in compliance might appear as a recent phenomenon, its application dates back to 2016, focusing on automating routine tasks through machine learning and natural language processing.

Regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) are not only observing but also expecting financial services to harness AI technologies. The FCA’s report from April 2024 illustrates the transformation AI is bringing not just in market operations but in regulatory frameworks as well, enhancing capabilities to identify fraudulent activities and malpractices.

Despite the evident benefits and regulatory encouragement, some compliance officers are still reluctant to fully integrate AI into their systems. This article aims to address and alleviate the underlying concerns that deter institutions from adopting this transformative technology.

One major concern is the perceived need for modern infrastructure to support AI functionalities. Many financial institutions (FIs) operate on legacy systems not originally designed for AI. However, these systems can continue to function with AI enhancements through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). AI vendors like WorkFusion are offering ready-to-use connectors and API frameworks, facilitating seamless data integration between AI tools and existing systems.

The quality and security of data is another significant apprehension. The success of AI heavily depends on the integrity of data it processes. Addressing this, companies like WorkFusion provide pre-trained AI models that are specifically tailored for AML and other FCC needs. For instance, WorkFusion’s AI Agent named Evan specializes in Adverse Media Monitoring and is capable of initiating effective alerts review right from deployment, thanks to its built-in industry knowledge and learning capabilities.

Concerns about data security, especially with the use of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Llama, often arise due to the misconception that AI must operate on the cloud, potentially exposing sensitive data outside the organization’s firewall. Contrary to this belief, on-premises installations are available, allowing firms like WorkFusion’s clients to run AI applications securely within their operational infrastructure, safeguarding crucial data.

Finally, the assumption that extensive technical expertise is required to operate AI solutions is becoming outdated. Modern AI tools are designed to be user-friendly, requiring minimal technical know-how. For example, Valley Bank has successfully automated their sanctions alert adjudication using an AI Agent, achieving a 65% automation rate in reviewing over 20,000 monthly alerts. This automation not only speeds up the process but also enhances the overall employee experience, demonstrating that the integration of AI can be as straightforward as hiring a new team member.
