ING launches ‘check the call’ anti-fraud tool in Belgium to combat impersonation scams

INGING

ING, a leading global banking group headquartered in the Netherlands, is expanding its fraud prevention efforts with the launch of its ‘check the call’ feature in Belgium.

The bank, known for its digital banking services and innovation in customer security, is bringing the tool to Belgian users following a successful rollout in the Netherlands.

The introduction of this tool comes in response to the increasing threat of helpdesk fraud, a growing form of cybercrime in which criminals impersonate bank employees over the phone to manipulate and defraud victims. The bank aims to reduce emotional and financial damage caused by this deceptive tactic.

ING is recognised for its commitment to safeguarding customer trust through technology-driven solutions. With a strong presence in Europe, the bank provides a wide range of financial services including retail banking, private banking, investment services, and digital innovation.

The newly launched ‘check the call’ feature enables users to instantly verify if someone calling and claiming to be from ING is indeed a legitimate bank employee. By providing real-time verification within the app, the tool empowers customers to better assess the authenticity of incoming calls, thereby helping prevent fraud before it occurs.

This feature is the first of its kind in the Belgian market. In the Netherlands, where it has already been introduced, over 10,000 customers use the tool every month. According to ING, 78% of users in the Netherlands report feeling more resilient against fraud attempts thanks to the feature.

In addition to Belgium, the tool has also been made available to customers in Italy, reflecting ING’s broader effort to enhance fraud prevention capabilities across its European network.

Supporting the need for such tools, a recent survey conducted by iVOX revealed that 61% of Belgians have faced attempted fraud, with SMS and phone-based phishing being the most prevalent. Alarmingly, 40% of those targeted suffered financial losses.

ING Belgium CEO Peter Adams said, “Sadly, an increasing number of Belgians are being targeted by criminals pretending to be bank employees.” “I’m proud that with check the call, we can help customers recognise and prevent fraud,” he added.
